POMONA - A documented gang member was back in jail today after leading a Pomona police officer on a pursuit and trying to discard a large- caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.
The patrol officer observed a traffic violation at Ninth Street and Waters Avenue at 12:35 a.m., said Pomona police Sgt. Todd Samuels.
The officer tried to stop the vehicle but the driver sped away, Samuels said, adding the driver circled the block, abandoned the car at Ninth Street and Waters Avenue and ran into a nearby alley.
“Officers gave chase and saw Suspect Guerrero clutching his waistband while removing items from his pockets and discarding them,” Samuels said. When officers cornered Guerrero in the alley, they saw him remove the semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and try to toss it on a carport roof. He was taken into custody without further incident and the handgun was recovered.
The suspect was identified as documented gang member Luis Guerrero, Samuels said.
“Officers also conducted a search of the route taken by Suspect Guerrero during the foot chase and located prepackaged narcotics of varying weights along with narcotics-related packaging material, which Guerrero attempted to discard,” the sergeant said.
Guerrero was booked into the Pomona jail on suspicion of multiple felony charges including evading, being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm, and transport and possession of narcotics for sale, Samuels said.
