February 12, 2015 – NATIONAL PLUM PUDDING DAY – ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S BIRTHDAY

Posted on 1:18 AM by sunnnata
National Plum Pudding Day - February 12

                                     NATIONAL PLUM PUDDING DAY

Celebrated on February 12th, National Plum Pudding Day is a day to learn more about this delicious dessert.
*  Plum pudding, also know as Christmas pudding, is a steamed or boiled pudding usually served during the holiday season.
*  In many recipes, plum pudding actually contains no plums.  The reason for this is in the 17th century, plums were referred to as raisins or other fruits.
*  The name Christmas pudding is first recorded in 1858 in a novel by Anthony Trollope.
*  Plum  pudding is usually made up of nutmeg, raisins, nuts, apples, cinnamon and dates along with other ingredients.
*  In England, traditionally every person in the home holds onto the wooden spoon together to help stir the batter.  While they are stirring, they also have to make a wish!
*  Plum pudding has also been known to be called plum duff.

New Hampshire police issue gag arrest warrant for Punxsutawney Phil

Posted on 7:00 PM by sunnnata

MERRIMACK, N.H. --
Police in snow-swamped New Hampshire are hunting for Public Enemy No. 1: The suspect is described as short and furry with brown eyes and big, pointy teeth.

Looking to lighten the mood after a series of snowstorms, Merrimack police posted a gag on their Facebook page asking the public to rat out Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania groundhog who last week predicted six more weeks of winter.

"We have received several complaints from the public that this little varmint is held up in a hole, warm and toasty," said the posting that was accompanied by an image of the mischievous groundhog from the movie "Caddyshack." ''He told several people that Winter would last 6 more weeks, however he failed to disclose that it would consist of mountains of snow!"

Police Chief Mark Doyle said the idea came during a conversation with Lt. Denise Roy as they shook their heads over the three major storms that have thumped New England since Jan. 27.

"We were chatting about how sick and tired we were, and she came up with the idea," Doyle said. "Everybody is looking at it for what it is: a tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted look at the winter we're having in the Northeast."

Doyle has heard from good citizens that Phil may be in Canada with Sasquatch. Others say the critter was spotted in New Orleans with a fistful - pawful? - of Mardi Gras beads.

It's not the first time Phil's gotten in trouble with the law: Officials in Ohio in 2013 "indicted" him for misrepresentation of spring, a felony "against the peace and dignity of the state."

On the New Hampshire Facebook page, Phil is described as "armed and dangerous." Doyle says if he gets his hands on the wily woodchuck, he's got the perfect sentence in mind:

"Life in the hole without parole," he said.

Mathematicians Discover How Many Licks It Takes to Get to the Center of a Tootsie Pop

Posted on 2:38 PM by sunnnata

The little Tootsie Pop boy can finally rest easy.
Mathematicians at New York University conducted a very important experiment to find out exactly how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Drum roll, please.
One thousand.
For those patient enough to not take a bite, graduate student Jinzi Mac Huang determined it would take 1,000 licks to make it through one centimeter of candy, which is approximately half the length of one Tootsie Pop. The study was done to explore the effects of dissolving materials within a fluid flow, such as rocks in geological environments and pills for pharmaceutical applications. The lollipop angle was just a fun side effect.
“We used these results to figure out in general how fluids dissolve materials, and we realized that that is basically what you’re doing when you’re enjoying a lollipop,” applied mathematics professor Leif Ristroph told ABC News.
“Using that model, we can take an object of any size and kind of a typical flow speed that would be determined by how fast you lick candy, and then determine how long it would take for that to dissolve all the material away," Ristroph said.
Using that model and a giant homemade ball of candy, they got to the rough estimate of 1,000 licks, though the study conductors weren’t able test out the theory themselves.
“We started to test it, and it’s hard. Resisting the temptation to just bite into one is tough,” Ristroph admitted.
Tootsie Roll got in on the fun, too, when they heard that NYU was conducting the study by sending them boxes of lollipops for “research.”
“How many licks is a question fans of our candy have asked us for decades,” Tootsie Roll Industries President Ellen Gordon told ABC News. “We’re thrilled that New York University has conducted a study to help find out how many licks it really takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.”

Heinz launches Sriracha-flavored tomato ketchup

Posted on 2:36 PM by sunnnata

NEW YORK --
H.J. Heinz is adding a little kick to its ketchup. How does Sriracha-flavored tomato ketchup sound?

The Pittsburgh-based company said it will start selling a ketchup blended with the popular red Thai hot sauce Sriracha this month. Sriracha's ingredients include chili pepper paste, garlic and vinegar. The sauce is named for and patterned after flavors from eastern Thailand.

In recent months, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut have announced plans to try dishes that include Sriracha flavoring.

H.J. Heinz Co. is owned by 3G Capital and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. In recent years the company has started selling ketchups blended with jalapeno pepper flavoring and Tabasco sauce. It also sells mustard, relish, barbecue sauce, and other condiments.

Pomona T.V. News - Yard Sale Graffiti

Posted on 10:06 AM by sunnnata

At first I couldn't see why someone would write numbers on the sidewalk (city property). Unless it was a tagger who just came from the school which is just down the street, and he's learning how to write numbers This is in front of  Bigs Mobile Home Park at 1461 W. Mission Blvd. here in Pomona.
Then it came to me, the guy who runs the mobile park, allows people to come and sell their things, during our yard sale weekends. So he goes out there and paints on city sidewalks ( I'm not sure if he charges people) and people come and set up. That's why these numbers are painted on CITY OWNED SIDEWALKS!. So write the guy a nice big ticket.

L.A. Supes Approves Year-Round Teen Jobs Program

Posted on 2:24 AM by sunnnata

The Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a plan to spend up to $6.5 million to subsidize jobs for disadvantaged teens year-round.
The county already has a summer jobs program for youth and put nearly 9,500 teens to work in summer jobs last year.
Funding for the year-round jobs program is available through CalWORKS, a state program that offers financial assistance to families with children to help pay for housing, food, clothing, medical care and other expenses.
For $6.5 million, the county could set up jobs for 1,500 CalWORKS teens to work up to eight hours during the school year and as many as 30 hours during the summer, according to board documents.
November state data shows that 16- to 19-year-olds have a 26.6 percent unemployment rate. Teens who lack work experience typically end up in lower- wage jobs as adults.
Supervisor Hilda Solis said she’d like those who proposed the program to look at using some of the money to expand the Parks After Dark program.
That summer parks program extends weekend hours until 10 p.m. and pays for organized sports, free concerts, movies and classes for residents.
It has been credited with significantly cutting violent crime in surrounding neighborhoods. Serious and violent crimes in the communities surrounding the original three parks in the program dropped 40 percent between 2009 and 2012, even as crime increased 5 percent in nearby neighborhoods without the program, according to a city survey.
“It plays a vital role in reducing the likelihood of youth participating in at-risk behaviors,” Solis said.
A report with recommendations is expected in 30 days.

February 11, 2015 – NATIONAL MAKE A FRIEND DAY – NATIONAL DON”T CRY OVER SPILLED MILK DAY – NATIONAL WHITE SHIRT DAY – NATIONAL SHUT-IN VISITATION DAY – NATIONAL PEPPERMINT PATTY DAY

National Make A Friend Day February 11

                                     NATIONAL MAKE A FRIEND DAY

Always celebrated on February 11th, National Make A Friend Day,  is a wonderful opportunity to meet someone new and make a new friendship.  Friends serve a very important role in everyone’s lives.  They are one of life’s most valuable assets.
It is very easy in the busyness of today’s world to miss out on spending time with our friends.   Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the importance of friendship.  We need to take a break from our hectic lives and spend time with our friends and February 11th, let’s take that time to make a new friend.  Where ever you are, whatever you are doing, say “hi” to someone, start up a conversation, and make a new friend!  You will be glad that you did.
A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier. (Wikipedia)

Within many different types of friendships, there are certain characteristics such as: affection, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other’s company, trust and the ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings and make mistakes without fear of judgement.
Friends often tend to share common backgrounds, occupations or interests and have similar demographics.
*  Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.  (Helen Keller)
*  Friends are those rare people who ask how you are and then wait for the answer.  (Unknown)
NATIONAL MAKE A FRIEND DAY HISTORY
Within our research, we are unable to find the creator of National Make A Friend Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

NATIONAL DON’T CRY OVER SPILLED MILK DAY

On February 11th, Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day is celebrated by many as a day to think positive.  Look on the bright side of thingsthen carry that with you every day after.  Do not worry and do not stress over the little things.   Life is to short to let the little things bother us.  Do not look at the negative in things, look for the positive.
Everyone knows that unexpected or unplanned things happen in life, sometimes on a daily basis.  To help handle this is to find something good in all things.   With a positive attitude, life is much brighter and easier.
Don’t cry over spilled milk.

National White Shirt Day February 11
National White Shirt Day February 11

NATIONAL WHITE SHIRT DAY/ WHITE T-SHIRT DAY

National White Shirt Day also know as National White T-Shirt Day is always celebrated on February 11th.
This “unofficial” National holiday honors the men and women who participated in the strike at General Motors in 1937.
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union was helped by these autoworkers to become the sole bargaining agent for General Motors autoworkers.
White Shirt Day is best known in Flint, Michigan and other cities that have a GM auto plant.

NATIONAL WHITE SHIRT DAY/WHITE T-SHIRT DAY HISTORY
Bert Christenson, a member of UAW Local 598, initiated this “unofficial” National holiday on February  11, 1948.

National Shut-In Visitation Day February 11
National Shut-In Visitation Day February 11

NATIONAL SHUT-IN VISITATION DAY

A visit to a shut-in can make a positive difference in that person’s life. February 11th celebrates National Shut-in Visitation Day and each year on this day, many people across the nation take time to make a difference.
Due to physical, mental and/or emotional reasons, there are people that are shut-ins that may feel lonely, isolated, sad and cut off from the rest of the world.  Sometimes these people do not have family and friends available to visit and spend time with them and they lack companionship.
We often take for granted our freedom to be able to go outside each day, take a walk around the block, drive to the mall, eat lunch at a restaurant, go to the gym, walk through the park and enjoy the scenery or the sandy beaches of the ocean.  These are things that shut-ins are not able to experience on any day.  A visit with them would brighten their day and we could share our experiences with them.
National Shut-in Visitation Day is a “unofficial” national holiday.

National Peppermint Patty Day February 11
National Peppermint Patty Day February 11

NATIONAL PEPPERMINT PATTY DAY

National Peppermint Patty Day, also known by some as National Peppermint Pattie Day, is celebrated each year on February 11th.
There were many chocolate-covered peppermints that had been made before the well known York Peppermint Pattie , which was first produced in 1940 and launched nationally in 1975.   The York Peppermint Pattie dominated the market because of it’s firmness and crispness while the others were soft.  A former “York” employee remembered that the final (sample) test of the pattie before it’s leaving the factory was called a “snap test”.  If the candy did not break clean in the middle, it was a second.
Celebrate National Peppermint Patty Day by trying one of these “tried and true” recipes:

This would be on the northwest corner of Third St. and Main St. looking west from Third St. Across from it, is now the dba watering hole. But where that building is, it's now a parking lot. You see they tore down all these buildings, so we could have parking lots.

White House confirms death of female ISIS hostage Kayla Mueller

Posted on 9:11 AM by sunnnata

WASHINGTON --
Kayla Mueller, a 26-year-old American woman held by Islamic State militants, has been confirmed dead, her parents and the Obama administration said Tuesday.

The White House said that Mueller's family received a private message from her captors over the weekend. The information in the message was authenticated by the U.S. intelligence community.

"We are heartbroken to share that we've received confirmation that Kayla Jean Mueller, has lost her life," Carl and Marsha Mueller said in a statement. "Kayla was a compassionate and devoted humanitarian. She dedicated the whole of her young life to helping those in need of freedom, justice, and peace."

President Barack Obama said that Mueller, who was worked with Syrian refugees, "epitomized all that is good in our world."

"No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla's captivity and death," the president said.

The Islamic State group said Friday that Mueller had died in a Jordanian airstrike.

Mueller was the only known remaining U.S. hostage held by the Islamic State group. She was taken into captivity in August 2013 while leaving a hospital in Syria.

Not helping at all

Posted on 8:02 AM by sunnnata

All this trash was in a shopping cart, in my alley. But the people who come by and pick up shopping carts, that are left out in the streets and alley ways. Well instead of finding a dumpster they could use (maybe from the city) instead they just dump the trash in our streets and our alley ways. It's bad enough that we have people using Pomona for their personal dumping ground. But to have a business come and help keep  Pomona free from sights like abandon shopping carts, only to have trash left behind. No I don't think so, instead of helping, they have become part of the problem.
Something has to be done about this, and I don't mean next week, I mean now.
